Once again my eyes are bigger than my back – perhaps I’ll get half of this actually in the ground. Seed ordering in the middle of winter depression is like going to the grocery store when really hungry. I also have a bunch of seed put back from last year so what’s on the list isn’t all I plan to plant.

The greenhouse is going up next week with a rocket stove to heat it above freezing on cold nights. I germinate seeds in the house and it will be nice to have a place to put them after they sprout rather than wiping out all available floor space and countertops in the house. We have a new housecat and I don’t want it to piss me off by ripping up flats. We grew twice as much last year as the year before and I’m sure I’ll double that again this year. No building projects until the garden is sown. Food trumps all this year.
Where did you order from? I ordered from Fedco and Baker Creek Seeds. You have a nice selection of medicinal herbs there as well!
[...] (Food, Garden, TEOTWAWKI, agrarian) Comrade Simba, one of my favorite crash bloggers, posted his seed order this AM and I think I will do the [...]
Michelle – this is all Fedco. Lots of seeds and not overpriced. There are a couple of goofball item I want that they don’t carry. I gotta grow a load of peanuts to eliminate the possibility of salmonella poisoning. God damn contaminated food supply.
The wife needs her herbs for potions. She’s a good witch!
Are you building it yourself, or using a greenhouse kit? If kit, which kind?
I’ll nail some 2 x 6 onto the south face of the barn on a 10/12 pitch (tied in to the existing rafters) cobble up some side walls, tack vinyl coated chicken wire onto it and throw a piece of plastic over the whole thing. Scavenged the lumber and chicken wire and was given the roll of plastic for free.
Price of nails, ho ho!
NO BEANS!
Michelle – I got bean seeds all over the house. saved them from last year… the one’s that I didn’t get around to picking and dried on the vine. Here’s a handy tip – plant the ones you buy in the store rather than pay seed company prices. They grow just fine. I grew a load of buck thirty-nine a pound grocery store red beans and they did as well as the high dollar catalog seeds. A friend duplicated the experiment. Same results. Stupid feed store whole corn grows just fine, too – makes for good chicken and pig food.
I also use commercial seed rather than the OG seed if it’s the same variety. “Heirloom” is nice, but non hybrid (open pollinated) is all I really care about.
I like Mike Oehler’s earth sheltered greenhouse. He lives in
nothern Idaho, and grow tomatoes into December.
Fo that matter it would make a pretty good hunting cabin
or hideout.
